Bishops, Knights, and Rooks in the barbershop!\u00a0 <\/span>12-year-old Cahree Myrick practices chess in a local Baltimore barbershop run by Sundiata Osagie. \u00a0 <\/span>Osagie described chess as a \u201cstaple\u201d at his barbershop.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cThat\u2019s just the culture we\u2019ve developed around here.\u00a0 <\/span>People will just stop in and say: \u2018Who\u2019s playing chess?\u00a0 <\/span>Who’s the chess players around here?\u2019\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n
Last May, Cahree made local history after winning first place in his division at the United States Chess Federation Super Nationals in Nashville, Tennessee.\u00a0 <\/span>According to the Baltimore Sun, he\u2019s the first competitor his age from Baltimore to do so.<\/span><\/p>\n
Cahree credits Osagie\u2019s barbershop for shaping him into a true competitor.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cSundiata, he\u2019s been my barber since I was like, 5 years old,\u201d Myrick said.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cHe taught me to be humble more — count your blessings and be a good person.\u00a0 <\/span>Don\u2019t be like, arrogant, don\u2019t walk in like that.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>Lessons we can all take to heart and not just over the chess board.<\/span><\/p>\n
